<image:title>Catalogue - Forvie Shawl - Growing up on the coast, I have had the sea as part of my life since I was very small. The ever-shifting combination of water and coastline as the tides change the landscape – both bringing to and taking away from the shore – was the inspiration for this design. The gentle eyelet motifs create a wave-like texture and are paired with a linear slip-stitch pattern that evokes the rolling sand dunes which accompany so many beaches. Forvie Shawl is designed in 1 size: Finished width: 152 cm (73 in) Finished depth: 52 cm (20.5 in) Ginger’s Hand Dyed Splendor 4-ply, Fingering / 4-ply, 50% Merino, 50% Silk, 400 m / 437 yds per 100g. <image:caption>Popularised in recent times thanks to their inclusion in the Harry Potter series; these unusual creatures are an older invention. While the Hippogriff is first mentioned obliquely by Virgil in the 1st Century BCE-1st Century ACE, he doe not name the beast - instead he simply describes its parentage. It is not until the 16th Century, that the beast is named as a Hippogriff in the poem Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. Both writers describe how the Hippogriff is the offspring of a mare and griffin, that combines attributes from both.</image:caption>

Sample shown in Ginger’s Hand Dyed Yakety Yak 4 Ply in the limited edition ‘Lion Rampant’ colourway, that was dyed for the 2018 Indie Burgh Craft Crawl in Edinburgh. ~ From the Scottish National Dictionary (1700), the verb Kyth (or Kythe), means to ‘to show or present oneself… to show one’s true character, “without any guile or hypocrisy”.’</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Northern Tanzania lies Lake Natron, a salt lake with a very distinctive colour. The lake derives its colours from the microorganisms that live within it. The evaporation leaves ridges of encrusted salt, in beautiful shades of pink and grey. Netjry is the Egyptian name for natron, and while the ancient Egyptians used natron in their mummification processes, it was actually used more widely. The elegant shawl combines a simple eyelet motif with short rows to combine colours in a striking pattern. Designed to be used with mini skeins, the pattern can be worked in any combination of colours preferred.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Located in Catalonia, around 100 kilometres from Barcelona lies Cardona – the home of a salt mountain. Mined for cetnruies, the salt mines have formed elaborate and beautiful tunnels and caverns of pink-hued salt, dripping with stalagmites and stalagtites. This DK-weight hat uses cables to create gently tapering forms, to create and interesting texture and pattern based on the natural formation of the mines from Cardona. Samples (both size M) shown in La Bien Aimée Merino DK, in the ‘Pêche Mignon’ colour way (pink) and Rowan Hemp Tweed, in the ‘Kelp’ colour way (Shade 142) (yellow).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slip stitches are a brilliant and surprisingly simple technique for combining different yarns and colours into a knitted item. While exploring ideas for this design, I came across some images of cross-stitched embroidery pieces and felt that the construction of these stitches could be ‘translated’ into knitting, to create an interesting and beautiful fabric. This top-down semi-circular shawl uses elongated slipped stitches and cables to create an intricate pattern that is surprisingly easy to work. Only one colour is worked at a time. The shaping is created by the increases worked on the wrong side of the shawl. Sample shown in Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk 4 Ply in he shades ‘Water Lily 005’ (MC) and ‘Piglet 001’ (CC).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Part of the joy of spinning fibre is deciding what to create with the finished yarn, but what happens when you have too many ideas to choose from? Sometimes you want a cowl, other times a shawl. Should it be snug? Or draped? Too many choices, far too little knitting time. So at the risk of sounding slightly like a super-hero movie… Is it a cowl? Is it a scarf? No, it’s Ensphere - a hybrid cowl-scarf-shawl accessory. Versatility is the main point - why have one option when you can have many? Twist it, drape it, or wrap it, you decide how you want to wear it. Whether it is coiled snugly around your neck, draped loosely as a shawl, or worn as a hood or a shrug, Ensphere is one truly adaptable accessory.</image:caption>

Due to the modular nature of the blanket, the finished shape (square, rectangle, etc.) and size can be customised easily. Additional squares can be added for a larger size; each block adds 6” / 15 cm to the finished size. This would require additional yarn (approx. 45 yds / 42 m per square plus extra for edging and seaming). Seaming / Joining Options There are two methods included in the pattern for joining the squares together once complete. These require different finishing methods, see full instructions for further information.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Duplessis is the seventh of eight patterns in the Courtesans shawl collection. Marie Duplessis was for a time the lover of Alexander Dumas, inspiring him to write the novel La Dame aux Camélias. The title stems from Marie’s habit of wearing or carrying camellias with her when she visited the theatre. Duplessis is a semi-circular shawl with lace motifs, worked from the top-down.</image:caption>

All the shawls each use 1 skein of fingering weight (approximately 350-400 yds / 320-366 m). Two are beaded, though the beads are optional and can be omitted if preferred. <image:caption>Notus, the Greek god of the South Winds – bringer of the storms of late Summer and Autumn. In the ancient texts, he is feared as the destroyer of crops and is a danger to travellers with his actions, heralding the end of the summer heat and beginning of the colder months. The pattern pairs garter stitch and short rows to create a flowing, textured shawl, with a spiralling cabled border echoing ideas and memories of breezy days. The shawl is asymmetric, forming a right angle triangular shape. The body is knitted first and edged with a sideways knitted on border. I-cord edging trims the shawl, and is worked throughout. Due to the construction of the shawl, the border can be worked in a second colour. The pattern includes written instructions for the body of the shawl, and full written and charted instructions for the cables.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Catalogue - 72 Degrees North</image:title>
<image:caption>72° N is the normal latitude for the Artic tree line in the northern hemisphere. Beyond this point, trees no longer grow due to incompatible conditions (barring a few exceptions where conditions are atypical). This cosy hooded cowl has decorative lace tree motifs which emulate the decrease in trees – in terms of both numbers and size. Folded hems, decreases and short row shaping create a gently-shaped accessory that can be worn as a cowl or a snug hood. The pattern is written for a heavy fingering / light sportweight yarn and is designed to produce a soft, flowing fabric which is still warm and cosy. The original sample used 1 skein of Old Maiden Aunt Merino/Cashmere/Nylon 4 Ply in the ‘Seen the Ocean’ colourway. Heavier weight yarns could be used but it is recommended to swatch first. Please note that if choosing alternative yarn weights that yardage / sizing may vary.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Catalogue - Breacan Wrap</image:title>
<image:caption>During the colder months, there is something about coming in on a chilly day and wrapping up in a blanket or shawl, with a warming drink (or whisky!) and watching the wind blow, or the rain or snow come down. Inspired by the patterns and colours associated with tartan, this cosy wrap is the perfect thing to keep warm on colder days. Breacan (pronounced brech-kan) is the Gaelic for tartan or plaid (it actually translates as ‘chequered’, ‘variegated’ or ‘speckled’). A brief history of tartan is included with the pattern. The wrap is double-knit and fully reversible, with the wrong side having the MC and CC colours inverted. Two colour options are provided: the Three Colour Version offers a solid MC / CC background, the Multi-Colour Version forms a gradient.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the ruins of the Baths of Emperor Diocletian in Rome, now stands the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri (St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs). In 2000, a glass skylight was added to the dome. The skylight, designed by the artist Narcissus Quagliata, casts wonderful colours around the building. For more information on the building and the inspiration behind the hat, this blogpost will help! The Oculus hat is based on the skylight, the colours seen in version A are directly inspired by the original and use yarns from Jamieson & Smith’s 2-Ply Jumper Weight and Shetland Heritage ranges.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A reversible crescent shaped top-down shawl, which uses short rows to create a broad yet shallow shape. The subtle lace decoration evokes the shape and form of bird’s wings. Pattern Format Pattern includes written instructions only. 5 pages. Sizes Small Large Finished Measurements 12 (18)” / 30 (45) cm from CO edge to tip along the centre stitch, 60 (75)” / 150 (190) cm wingspan along top edge. Measurements taken after blocking. Yarn Fingering weight (4 Ply), DK (8 Ply) The pattern will work best in solid or semi-solid colourways. Variegated yarns will work but may obscure the lace details in the edging. Shorter sequence striping yarns (such as Zauberball or similar) are not recommended as the short rows in the initial sections may cause unwelcome colour transitions. Longer transitional gradients (shading from light to dark or similar) would also work well. Sample shown - Small: One colour version uses Ring-a-Rosie Selina (55% Wool, 45% Silk; 400 yds / 366 m per 100g skein; shade ‘Early Spring’).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Catalogue - The Kentigern Blanket</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspired by the motto and coat of arms of Glasgow which draws on the life and miracles of St. Mungo, alternatively known as St. Kentigern: Here’s the tree that never grew, Here’s the bird that never flew, Here’s the fish that never swam, Here’s the bell that never rang. The blanket uses architectural elements and broad strokes of colour to create a highly distinctive repeating motif which draws on the images present in both the coat of arms and the motto. This pattern was originally submitted to the Glasgow School of Yarn Design Competition in 2012 and won both First Prize and the People’s Choice award. The Kentigern Blanket is knit in the round, steeked and finished with a steek sandwich and i-cord edging. The pattern is modular with two inset motifs. Full charts for the colourwork sections are included.</image:caption>
